Business Challenge 

E.ON, as a geographically and organizationally diverse international group, sought to establish a unified, scalable, and cost-efficient collaboration platform to enhance internal communication, content management, and knowledge sharing across the organization. However, the presence of different Microsoft SharePoint versions and varying maturity levels across subsidiaries hindered the creation of a unified service catalog, increased operational costs, and introduced significant security risks.

Solution

E.ON defined five key target parameters to guide the project, along which Abesse’s experts, working as part of an international team in an English-speaking environment, designed and executed the migration and consolidation process. 


  • Comprehensive international unification and modernization – leveraging hybrid components with a unified governance framework and service catalog. 

  • Content consolidation and quality improvement – elimination of redundant content, enhanced searchability, and optimized information architecture. 

  • Operational efficiency and cost optimization – reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO), automated operational processes, and a standardized support model. 

  • Process modernization – replacement of legacy workflows with Power Platform solutions and transition of business applications to a “cloud-ready” state. 

  • Change management – smooth migration of approximately 40,000 users through training, communication, and dedicated support channels. 

 

Throughout the project, Abesse experts played a key role in assessing and auditing the source systems, performing in-depth analysis of more than 20 applications, and conducting the initial pre-design assessment. The team designed the new hybrid architecture based on SharePoint 2019 and Microsoft 365, ensuring scalability and interoperability. Abesse was also responsible for establishing the service catalog and SLAs, as well as building a unified governance framework across the organization. In addition, Abesse specialists were instrumental in developing the migration strategy and defining the security and compliance requirements of the new platform. 

 

Results

The newly consolidated environment delivers a modern user experience and provides significantly faster access to information across the organization. 


Thanks to the hybrid architecture, both group-level and local requirements are effectively met — group-wide services are delivered from the cloud platform, while locally integrated solutions remain accessible through the on-premises layer. The well-designed operations, governance, and security processes have made the environment more scalable and cost-predictable. As a result, technology and product lifecycle risks have been significantly reduced. 


Taken together, these improvements enable E.ON’s entire international organization to rely on a more stable, secure, and resilient SharePoint environment.
